---|---|---|
Lane | Description | Advancement Goals |
1 | Continue to work on breath holding so swimmers can front float for 10 seconds independently. Once they can front and back float, they advance to kicking and swimming. |
|
2 | Swimmers front kick in a streamline position over 25 feet without stopping/breathing. They'll continue to improve their freestyle and, once back kick is perfected, then advance to backstroke. |
|
3 | Instructed on freestyle side breathing, and backstroke. introduction to breaststroke kick in advance of moving to lane 4. In order to advance to lane 4, swimmers must master side breathing. |
|
4 | Continue to work on freestyle and backstroke in the deep area of the pool. Also, work on treading, and breaststroke kick. Once they have breaststroke kick, they have an introduction to whole breaststroke |
|
5 | Primarily work on breaststroke and butterfly, but in order to finish the program (sticker #10) they must swim 300 yards freestyle. To secure their 8th sticker, they have to swim whole breaststroke, and whole butterfly. At that point, they have mastered the four competitive strokes, so we move on to 'safety strokes.' | Congradulations: After Sticker 10 Swimmers can stay in our program for a short time to work on endurance, advance to a local swim team, or swim for fun. |
Baby n' Me:
REQUIREMENTS TO BEGIN: 22-42 months old (3 ½) with a parent. A plastic swim diaper is required. No Disposables.
CLASS SIZE: 5 swimmers maximum during Covid-19. CLASS LENGTH: 30-35 minutes COST: Priced as Group Lessons
Baby & Me is a fun class with one parent and one child which focuses on submersion combined with water activities and song. Water toys help incorporate skills including front and back floating, breath holding, and jumping independently.
- We recommend families observe a class in session in advance of registration. No appointment necessary.
- Pediatrician approval if any medical history, as the babies are submerged!
- If you are enrolled in Baby Class until Age 3.5 (did not advance to Young 3's) you will either go to lane 1, or take Semi Privates. You would stay in the Baby Program if you are Age 3.5
YOUNG 3’S - Our swimmers over Age 3.5 will go to Group Lessons in Lane 1
This a progression class from our Baby N Me program, so ONLY for our Baby n' Me customers.
REQUIREMENTS TO BEGIN:
1) at least 3 years old
2) 100% potty trained,
3) Graduated and excelled in the RKSA Baby N Me class. (teacher will recommend if able to advance).
CLASS SIZE: 1 Instructor to 3/4 swimmers CLASS LENGTH: 30-40 minutes COST: Priced as Group Lessons
Young 3’s incorporate fun water activities without parents in the pool. This class is perfect for swimmers who have progressed from our Baby Class and not quite ready for the structure (sitting still/safety) and maturity (separation) that Group Lessons require. The goal is to graduate to Group Lessons and start on the Swim America Pre-School chart at Age. 3.5
NERVOUS BEGINNER SEMI-PRIVATES - Not offered all weeks of our programming and subject to lane 1 openings. Lane 1 openings are limited during Covid-19.
REQUIREMENTS TO BEGIN: 3 ½ - 6 years old and 100% potty trained.
CLASS SIZE: 1 instructor to 2 swimmers CLASS LENGTH: 30 minutes COST: $30/Each
Semi-Privates are required for beginners who have not passed the Swim Test. The purpose of this transitional class (3 to 4 lessons) is to teach them how to be comfortable going completely under water. Once they can comfortably go under water, retrieve treasure, complete 10 relaxed bobs, and jump from the side, they can progress to Group Lessons where they’ll start the learn-to-swim process in Lane 1.

OLDER STARTERS (OS)- Offered on a very limited basis during Covid-19. Email our office to check availability.
REQUIREMENTS TO BEGIN: 7-10 years old and have passed the swim test. Classes are 30-40 minutes depending on class size.
CLASS SIZE: 1 instructor to 3 swimmers CLASS LENGTH: 30 minutes COST: Priced as Group Lessons
1 instructor to 4 swimmers CLASS LENGTH: 40 minutes COST: Priced as Group Lessons
This class is designed for swimmers whose age and ability level do not align well with the RKSA lanes/levels. We have 5 ability levels, and most swimmers in lane 1/level 1 are Age 3.5-6. Older Starters have started the learn to swim process later in life, so their skill level is equivalent to lane 1 but are between the age of 7-10 years. In OS, all swimmers are 7-10 years so they do not have to learn with young swimmers and that makes for a more comfortable environment. Once their skills catch up to lane 2 or lane 3 level, we'll graduate you out of this program and you'll be placed in a traditional GROUP LESSON (not the OS, specialty class).
PRE-TEAM (now called Swim Team Trak) - Not offered during COVID-19.
REQUIREMENTS TO BEGIN: Lane 4 or Lane 5 indicating they can swim freestyle with a nice side breath, and can swim backstroke in 8 feet of water. The class is coached by Rob Knight and is an hour and ten minutes. By extending the class length, he can focus on swim team skills and drills in preparation for your swimmer to advance to Bloomington Normal Swim Club (a USA year round swim team).
CLASS LENGTH: 1.10 minutes . 9:1 ratio.
COST: Priced as Group Lessons. $16/18 a class depending on if you are enrolled once, or twice a week.
This program is designed for swimmers who want to join BNSC. If swimmers already have 10 stickers, they already qualify for BNSC, and are skills are too advanced for this program. The program is offered 3x/week, and while you can join just 1x/week, twice a week would expedite the progress.
SWIM TEAM (BNSC)
RKSA is the feeder program for the year-round, USA Swim Club, Bloomington Normal Swim Club (BNSC). These are two separate business entities. And, there are other year round USA swim teams, and for summer, there is the Twin Cities Swim Conference which offers fun, non-USA swim meets. Twin Cities Swim teams (summer) are not associated with a USA swim club. www.bnswimclub.org

REQUIREMENTS TO BEGIN BNSC: Proficient in all 4 competitive strokes, Free, back, breast, & fly. If you have earned sticker #8 at RKSA, you have mastered all 4 strokes and are eligible to attend a trial. Swim team is not located at the RKSA facility as swimmers of this ability level need to practice in a 25 yard pool.
ADULT LESSONS
We no longer offer Adult Classes. Please check availability at the City of Bloomington or the Town of Normal's Parks and Recreation programs.
FAMILY SWIM - Not offered during COVID-19.
Come and let your kids show you their latest skills, or just splash in the pool together! We provide a lifeguard on deck, but parents are required to be in the water with their children, unless your swimmer is in the deep end. This service is completely free for currently enrolled families. There’s no need to reserve in advance; Family Swim is first-come, first-served! *Remember, swim diapers are required for all children that are not 100% potty training according to the McLean County Health Department.
PRIVATE LESSONS - Summer only, or during Covid-19
We typically teach Privates lessons during the Summer only when kids are out of school and can come during the day.
Privates are usually scheduled Monday/Tuesday at 11:15am, or Monday through Thursday at 3pm.
Privates are ideal for:
- Swimmers who want more individual attention to work on their stroke technique
- Swimmers are typically Age 6-11.
- Swimmers who have limited availability (travel, etc.) so cannot commit to our 9-week program.
- Water Safety (to be safe in deep water during Camp, or at the pool without a parent).
